Recently, I completed a sexual assault trial. Two men were accused of aggravated rape and other sexual assault crimes occurring in New Bedford, MA in late 2014. When the two men were arrested, neither of them gave a statement to the police and fortunately, each chose to hire experienced criminal defense attorneys; I was one of them.
The trial commenced at the end of January 2019. The prosecutor presented evidence that included testimony from the alleged victim and a witness to the alleged conduct. The defense vigorously cross examined the witnesses. After two days of deliberations, the jury acquitted both of the defendants of the charges.
If convicted, the defendants could have faced life in prison. These are the types of cases that hiring an attorney with over twenty years of experience allowed the accused his freedom and reputation.
